Floor Laying ( the Meaty Part )

Once you get past the first hurdle, ie 3-4 rows of planks, installed... the rest is pretty much plain sailing, at least until we get to a doorway. The trick with ANY type of flooring, and moreso, laminate flooring, is to work from at least 3-4 packs.

We install flooring the WRONG way.

Yes it is true we actually dont listen to what the so called experts and manufacturers state, we install flooring the wrong way round.

In fact we have been installing flooring the wrong way round, fo over 12 years. Weve laid 1000's of square metres, all around the wrong way ! I will explain why below. But first click the image below to see the CORRECT way of laying flooring

Ok there is method in the madness. Plus we have trained a few fitters in our time, and come what may, they all leave us, installing flooring OUR way. We have checked nearly all manufacturers warranty information, and are pretty sure our way of installing laminate floors, doesnt infringe your warranty. Its just OUR way.

The reasons we install our flooring this way, are pretty simple.
1) less fatigue on your hands
2) we feel you get a positive click, this way, as the flooring joint locks into place ( tongue onto groove ) .
Back to business, of laying floors. We recommend you work from left to right as you see our fitter here. We dont use kneepads, neither, we use foam gardening mats , very comfy and they dont dislodge your kneecap. Once you have complete rows of flooring, being laid, ie full planks, with just a cut at each end, all goes quite quickly. If you plan on installing flooring, full time, then our tips will save you time, and make you more money.

 Basics of joining the planks, are shown in the diagram above, here you can see our fitter, introducing the ends. By holding the new plank to be laid at a 30-40 degree angle, and sliding the joints into placehe can then lock it down into position..

Once the ends of the planks have been joined, move the plank down and LOCK into position. This is an easy technique, and practice makes perfect.. we just whack the new plank with the palms of our hands.

This is what we call the lock. Now that the ends of the plank are in position and locked, we hold the full plank firmly, with our fingertips, just under the edge of the plank, and jerk the plank towards us. This locks the plank into position. Again a tap with the back of the hands, achieves a nice locked joint. TIP: when holding the plank, try angling it to about 5 degrees, this ensures a cleaner lock ( click ). Tip :when locking the planks into position, control movement with your right hand, to ensure clean fit

This is how we recommend the flooring to be installed. Always stagger your end joints, by minimum of 200mm. Ok this isnt always possible, but try and ensure that this is the case. The flooring gains rigidity en masse. So the greater the distance between joints, then the stronger the bond. Very similar to brick wall construction.
