Flooring Marking Cutting and Scribes

Most people with half an ounce of DIY skills, can install floating laminate floors. To be fair, most make a good job of it. But, on the whole, people really struggle on the cuts, scribes and splices. Its a tricky area, and maths and geometry comes into play.
Follow our guide, and read and look at the images, carefully, to understand how we do it. A well installed floor, is a reflection of the installer, not the flooring. .

Marking planks for the Cut

As previously seen on the last page, regarding marking planks for the end of a row. Here you can see our fitter, close up marking the exact position for the cut. It is paramount, that you do not mark the actual end of the plank, but the end of the laminate ! Transfer this mark to the plank to be cut..
Now that he has marked the position, he uses a carpenters square to mark a straight line across the plank. Belo please see our tutorial on non square walls.

 Walls that begin to get wider, are easier to install to. As the long edge of the new cut plank is outermost, whilst the shorter edge is to be fitted against existing planks.

When the walls get narrower, as in this figure. Its a bit trickier to install.This now harks back to why we install the way we install, ie the wrong way round. Of course you can install the way you want. BUT. In this scenario, installing this plank in this situ, is made easier, because of the way we are installing. See Below. .

Every fitter has his own way of doing things. We do too, however we want the easy life. Installing floors in this manner, is fiddly, and can be time consuming. But once you have mastered the geography of the floor and anatomy of the flooring joint, all clicks into place, pardon the pun.

As the saying goes " Measure twice Cut Once "

This principle works in almost every situation. Once you can master this simple technique, you are well on your way to becoming a semi pro flooring installer. Even the most awkward shapes, are easily overcome and accomplished flooring results can be the normal.
I think the trick with this type of flooring installation is to understand the principles, of tongues and grooves. What can go where, and which bit can be above another bit etc etc .. Play about with your flooring, and you will soon get the grasp.

We love scribing doorways, and fitting flooring into this area. Its one of those situations, that practice makes perfect, and no matter what anyone tells you, you have to try it to be able to do it.
We could write a book on Scribing floors into Doorways. And it would be pretty complex stuff. Theres a lot to understand, and be able to do. But it isnt rocket science, and those that maintain how EASY it is, are generally those that havent got a clue.

Key to Terms Used in Next tutorial.

Scribe : Mimicking the shape of a space and copying that onto laminate flooring and reproducing it.
Undercut : Undercutting a doorway doorjamb , architrave by means of a japanese or pull saw. Highly accurate way of cuttiing wood, on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke.
