Well this is how to install Laminate flooring. There are many images on this page so please allow the page to fully load.
Flooring can be really very awkward at times !
Lets get stuck straight into this tutorial. .
To scribe a doorway, architrave and door stop. We ned to understand a few thing, ie, whats what.....
Door Frame ( door jamb ) is the actua frame of the doorway, do not cut into this !
Door Architrave, is the decorative timber surrounding both sides of a door frame, closes the gap behind between frame and plaster, tis we CAN cut
Door Stops ( Loose and Fixed ) These are the timber strips, the face of the door closes against when we shut the door. Loose stops are pieces of wood fitted after the frame was installed, these we can sut. Fixed stops, are part of the actual door jamb, we wouldnt recomment cutting these.
Okay down to business. . We need to do an undercut to the architrave, and loose door stops. This is simple and quick. Tools needed are: Pullsaw , small chisel, and hammer.
Take a spare piece of laminate flooring ( scrap) and place it upside down on a piece of flooring underlay. Push the edge up against your architrave, and holding the blade of your saw, flat against the lamte, cut into the architrave.
The cut piece should plop right out. If it doesnt use some persuasion, with a hammer and a chisel. Be careful as you can split the architrave mouldings quite easily. Remove dust afterwards.
The concept here, is to finish the flooring, so that when the door is cloed, the expansion profile ( door Strip ) is hidden by the closed door. i.e. its right beneath it. This means we need to make sure the floor finishes halfway across the door stops ( see figure )
Here our flooring installer, has carefully measured his flooring, the gap we have, and scribed these shapes and sizes onto a laminate flooring plank. There are many ways in which to no install this piece of flooing. We prefer the method shown below.
By installing the doorway flooring, in this stuation in 2 pieces, we can easily install and finish the flooring. However if we try and do this in one piece it can be an utter nightmare to fit.
Rule of thumb: Working into a doorway, do it in two.
Working from a doorway one will do.
As you can see a perfect fit. Remember to allow expansion under the architrave for the flooring. Also at the sides near the door jamb also allow about 8mm, basically the thickness of a pensil gap. This can be filled upon completion, with self coloured matching sealant, or a paintable decorators caulk .
As you can see , once the floor has been cleaned and is complete, furniture returned, the transformation is superb..
This shows the installer, sealing the architraves with decorators caulk. We opt for this method where clients have white paintwork, as it gives a cleaner sharpr line. Look closely next to the fitters left elbow, an you can see the matching door strip installed. In situations like this, we use a standard "T" expansion joint and silicone it in place..
The hall floor is now complete, and nipped under the stair carpet. This gives a nice neat finish.
